Nutanix Acropolis hypervisor (AHV) vs Vmware vSphere hypervisor, AOS 5.5 edition

Third installation of this popular post comparing Nutanix Acropolis Hypervisor (AHV) and Vmware vSphere Hypervisor. This version is based on Nutanix AOS 5.5 version. Earlier versions of this post can found by clicking following links: 4.6 and 5.0.

There are still some use cases where using Vmware with Nutanix platform is required. But the list is getting smaller and smaller and there are less and less reasons to pay hypervisor licensing fees.

AHV vs Vmware, AOS 5.0 edition

Few months ago I compared Vmware against Acropolis Hypervisor. At that time I listed ten use cases or features where Vmware was better or the only option as Hypervisor in Nutanix environment.

Now that Nutanix is about to release new version of their operating system, AOS 5.0, it is time to revisit this topic again.

Nutanix Acropolis hypervisor (AHV) vs Vmware vSphere hypervisor

For most implementations requiring basic hypervisor functionality Nutanix KVM-based Acropolis Hypervisor (AHV) is a good choice, even with some functional benefits over Vmware vSphere, cost wise AHV is hard to beat as it comes for free with Nutanix system. Please visit Josh Odgers’ blog for a good description of benefits using  AHV.

However there is less information available on cases where Vmware hypervisor might be better fit or the only option. Like always there are fringe cases where a solution isn’t optimal or doesn’t fit at all, that is true also for AHV.
